Nick was a great traveler again, but still only 45 min of sleeping on a 11 hour flight - This flight was late so our next connection, we thought was unreachable, we just wanted to be home so terrible! We were the first ones off the plane and ran literally ran through passport control, baggage, waited for our bags (we didn't have time to wait for the stroller so we ditched it since it was free anyway)and rechecked them domestically - we had to then run to another international checkpoint - with we had to have an interview, since we are American and bringing a Russian baby with us. The wonderful agent took our papers and let us run to make our connecting flight - on a train, then to the opposite end of the terminal - we made our flight! I slept while Jon entertained Nick with stickers -

We were met by wonderful family! Natalie was thrilled to see us and Nick finally. We had our yard decorated by our neighbors with balloons and welcome home signs.

Yesterday was a little rough getting adjusted, mainly just due to the time difference. Nat, Nick and I all took a long nap and today is really great.

- side note - Delta called us yesterday and said that they would deliver our stroller to our house and by 9pm it was here on our doorstep! - hilarious! A free stroller that we didn't even care about made it home with us too!
Thank you to everyone who followed us on this most amazing journey. Once I find my camera cord - I will post more pictures!!

Happy Last Full Day from Russia!

Hi Everyone!

Things are going very well here. Our trip is starting to wind down and we are very excited to get home. Jon just reminded me that we take off in 24 hours and 30 minutes ....yes, we're down to the minute count now!

Here's a quick update on what we've been up to....

Most of Thursday was spent finalizing Nick's paperwork and conduct the interview at the US Embassy here. Everything went great. The US agent was very helpful and gave us some tips to help speed up the process when we land in Atlanta. Unfortunately, we didn't fully check out all of the details on Nick's USA visa and immigration packet....until we got back to the hotel....and needless to say, the Embassy typed his wrong passport number on all of the documentation. So....most of my Friday was spent clearing that up and was at the Embassy for the majority of the late morning and early - mid afternoon. The good news is that everything was fixed and we're good to go for our trip tomorrow. Nick and Jon hung out at the hotel and "bonded". We did get some shopping done later....although the prices were astronomical and I understand now why the foreigners have so many shopping bags !! :)

Yesterday was "tourist" day. We toured Red Square and the Kremlin. Very amazing. We witnessed a procession similar to the "Changing of the Guard" and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also saw Lenin's tomb as well as the burial sight of all of the Russian leaders. We toured St. Basil's Cathedral which was absolutely beautiful (picture above). It was very surreal for both Jon and I to be there..... I only wish that there was some English translation (there probably is but we couldn't find anything) but was still very impressive being there. Lots of good stories for you. Unfortunately, we also witnessed a mini attack in Red Square. Some protestors set off some stink and smoke bombs and were yelling some phrases that apparently didn't impress the Russian police and soldiers. The guys were immediately pounced upon and led away. The police cleared the area for some time and order was restored. Very odd to see it all....and makes me very happy that we're coming home soon. We also toured Christ the Saviour Cathedral. All of the architecture and churches are incredibly beautiful. Got a little more shopping in too.... and ate at Sbarro. Jon said the Mountain Dew was tasty! So, all in all, it's been a very good trip. We've logged many walking miles and the tred on Nick's stroller is virtually non-existent. The weather has been awesome as well.... low 60s. He still has to wear his snow suits or the natives would get restless! What little down time we've had has been watching a lot of movies (thanks to Karen, Julie, Shawn and Jason)!

The streets are rather quiet today....Sunday is definitely a day of reflection in Russia. Although we're told that things will pick up later...which is good as we need to complete some last minute shopping.

Nick is doing great. He's adjusting well, eating very well, still sleeping great (YEA!) and making both of us laugh. We are incredibly blessed and look forward to getting him home (do you sense a common theme here?!? :) )

We hope everyone is doing well and can't wait to see you all very soon.

Love,
Beck, Jon and Nick

Greetings from Moscow!

Hi everyone! Greetings from Moscow. Where McDonalds is on every corner.....

We made here yesterday afternoon. The flight was long and fairly uneventful. We had great flying weather and little stinker Nick only took a 1/2 hour nap for the 9 hour flight. He was really great on the plane though. (Better than Jon, altho he had 3 happy pills and that was good for all of us!) 2 meals on the plane helped Nick since he LOVES to eat!! Here's a photo from the flight......

We came through the airport with all our baggage -- Nick and I made it through all the check points. Guess who was stopped by the Russian Police? He questioned Jon about his passport, why he was in Russia, why he had a Russian passport (for Nick), etc. And he spoke very broken English so Jon "struggled" with that as well. Since Nick and I were ahead of him and already through the doors, we had no idea what was going on. Apparently Jon's temper was starting to show (real smart, I reminded him) but our interpreter Mia arrived -- very timely! She walked over to the doors, walked in and answered all of the policeman's questions. Good thing too.

It was a 45 min drive to our hotel which is located just 10 minutes from the Kremlin and Red Square. We are hoping to tour all of it on Friday. There is also alot of shopping nearby (YEA!) so we'll hit that over the weekend. We did walk through downtown Moscow today. Very beautiful, and alot more to do and see here than in Vlad. The architecture here is amazing. We were out for about 4 hours wandering the streets and taking in the scenary...oh, and the Hard Rock Cafe. Good to have some American fries! Although everything is really expensive here.....from the hotel rooms, food, cost to call the US ($10/min) and use the internet ($50/hour). But we do have CNN :) and plenty of movies to make it through Monday.

We have our last official appointment with the US Embassy tomorrow afternoon. Apparently it's an interview that we have to do... not sure what that will entail....but ask for your continued thoughts and prayers. On the good side....all our paperwork has been accepted by the Embassy so we're hoping this is painless.....

Thanks again for all of the responses and well wishes. We look forward to logging on and hearing from all of you as well. As Jon says, t minus 5 days til we're home.

Love,

Beck, Jon and Nick

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday to all of you!

Today was our last day in Vlad. We all got up late again (Loving it!) - around 9am! Slow morning we stayed in our pj's and ate lunch. Nick took a 2 hour nap and Jon watched a movie while I read a great magazine -(thanks krissy!!)

We had to go pick up Nick's Russian Passport to bust him out of here, then off to the doctor for a quick medical visit for - you guessed it , more paperwork for the US Embassy when we hit Moscow. It was in a little tenement building and her office was so small that we had to turn sideways to pass each other. All in all it was very easy and she was kind.

Our flight leaves for Moscow tomorrow around 1pm. He slept all night.... went to bed at 10pm and woke up at 9:30 this morning (actually 8:30 as Russia went to Daylight Savings Time overnight). This works out quite well for Jon and I (and Nat)....considering we all love our sleep.

We hung out this morning and played. Nothing too exciting.

The weather is getting warmer and the snow has completely melted. We walked to our little market this afternoon and purchased our last few items for our stay here. Then walked to the beach and saw the ocean. Interesting that there were piles of snow at the edge of the beach/water and also some frozen areas in the ocean itself. Something that we've never seen, so we experienced something new with Nick too. We also saw a train on our walk and it fascinated Nick. We occasionally forget that almost everything is "new" to him as he stares in amazement at the people and all of the activity around him.

Jon was (and is) going stir crazy....not a lot to do in Vlad. Definitely looking forward to staying in downtown Moscow.....near the Kremlin and Red Square. Getting out and seeing sights will be great. We saw the weather will be in the 50s which will be great too. We leave here at 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon (9:30 Monday night in Chicago) for our 8 hour flight. We then fly home on Monday 4/7 -- through Atlanta -- and arrive at O'Hare around 8pm. We are both definitely looking forward to getting home. And bonus -- 8 days early! Jon's also pumped because he says we should get home for part of the second half of the men's college basketball national championship game (oh yippee!) We resorted to watching the first episode of Knots Landing! Very thrilling in case anyone missed it from 1979. Was fun to see though...

We had to wait until Thursday afternoon for Arina to pick us up. She was helping another couple from Alabama on their 2nd trip as well. We left at 2 pm; had our court decree notorized, then had to go to the Dept of Vital Records to have Jon sign Nick's adoption decree and new birth certificate that has Jon and I as his parents. On our way out of Vlad, on our way to pick up Nick, Arina received another call about the Alabama couple's court and a snafu in their paperwork. As a result, we sat in the car for 2.5 hours while they tried to get everything ready for their court hearing Friday at 9:30 am. We sympathized and couldn't imagine them traveling all this way not to have court. (As it turns out, their court went fine and their little guy is adorable.) Finally, we stopped at a grocery store to get a cake for the caregivers and get pull ups for Nick. It was 7pm by the time we hit the baby's home. The doors were locked and no one was in sight. We were a little nervous that we wouldn't get Nick after all. But, Arina worked her magic, as she has several times throughout this trip and let us in through a side door. The Doctor was waiting for us. He prescribed Nick some antibiotic and cough medicine to make him "healthy" for our trip home (Nick has a cold)... so we got that all settled, and in walked Nick with his outfit (shorts, long johns, 3 shirts, and sandals) and came right to Jon. He also the items that we left him on the first trip.... his pic album of the family, a disposable camera that we hope have some shots of his "groupa" and the bear that Natalie had given him. The bear is now affectionately known as "Mishka" (Russian for bear). His caretaker then redressed him in the outfit that we brought along and she started to cry, which in turn made me cry as well. We can certainly see the love that this baby home has provided to Nick over the first 2 1/2 years of his life. We finally said our good bye (paca), left our gifts the baby home and headed back for the hotel.

On the way, we had to stop to pick up Nick's antibiotics. He also had not been fed lunch because the children here are known to get ill on the car ride back to the hotel. They have never been in cars, or any type of "machina" and the uneven roads here are very torn up with pot holes (we thought Illinois was bad, not even close!). To top it off, Nick has never been outdoors at night, so was a little afraid of that as well. He held onto Jon in the car, with a death grip, but all in all, had a great trip back to the hotel.

We arrived around 8:30 pm, played catch, fed him (lots!), read, etc (thus no blog last night) and he laid down in his crib at 10pm. Not a peep. We're lucky. He slept until 7am this morning....was awake a couple of times with a cough but nothing too big.

Today was a great day getting to know one another. As all parents say, their children are intelligent, and Nick is no exception. Although he doesn't speak much (cleft pallet -- which isn't noticable), he understands very well and is cognizant of everything around him. He is very independent and does everything on his own time (hmmm...remind you of anyone) . He eats very well -- on his own, is already potty trained (yea!), dresses himself, knows kleenex and blows his own nose and carries arounds his toys like he's never gonna let them go! :) We've played -- all day -- watched a couple of Baby Einstein videos, and he's now ready to go play with some of the other kids that are here. It's busy here. Which is great :) .

Jon had a busy afternoon. He went to get the visa and passport pics developed of Nick, then notarized, then to the passport office to apply for Nick's passport, then to get those docs apostilled, then to Vital Records Dept again, then to the notary, then to the Ministry of Education, then to Aeroflot to change the flight to Moscow for next week (they were closed so he's going back tomorrow) and then to the grocery store. Needless to say, he's enjoying a Bud "Heavy" as I write this.

It has been an excellent week for us and we continue to thank God that Nick has joined us. We thank all of you as well for your thoughts & prayers. We wouldn't be here without all of you making us stronger. We cannot wait to get home to see Natalie and have Nick meet all of our wonderful family and friends.

Our Gotcha evening - with his caretaker

Nick shoveling - literally - bananas in for dinner
Watching out our hotel window for his "meow-meows" - all the wild cats live behind the building.

Hugs and love,

Beck, Jon and Nick

It is official !!!!

This has truly been one of the greatest days of our lives....

Jon was up at 3am today, worrying about the court date. I was up at 6am. Honestly, both of us were quite nervous about the entire process. We watched "Old School" to take our mind off of it for awhile, which was a great reprieve. We also happened to be flipping channels and found the Russian version of an American sitcom classic. Quite funny.... we will attach a quick view for all of you when we get home....a good laugh (takes too long to upload here!)

Lana (our translator) picked us up at 12:30 this afternoon. We had to get one "last" document notarized and then it was off to court. We arrived about 1:15 and my husband immediately started pacing (not unusual for all of you that know him). The building was dark (loss of power occasionally we're told) -- not to mention that up until 5 years ago, it was a psychiatric hospital. Somewhat nerve-wracking.

Court started promptly at 2pm, with the Judge, backup Judge, Prosecutor, Social worker, Lana, Jon and me. The Judge asked us a series of questions about work, our family -- parents, siblings and Natalie, friends, the adoption process, Americans adopting from Russia and of course, our little Nick. She spoke with both of us, then individually as well. Lana told us to expect the Judge to be incredibly stoic -- all business -- no smile, etc. Well.....the Judge didn't know my husband. Jon had her in stiches -- smiles and laughs within 10 minutes, while in the meantime attempting to convince her that she needed to waive the 10 day wait period and that we needed to get Nick home to see our Dr. asap. Interestingly enough, the power came back on during his dissertation! During the hearing, we had convinced the Prosecutor that it was in Nick's best interest to waive the extra 10 days, and the Social worker backed us up as well. Both told the Judge that they agreed with our request to waive the additional 10 days. The Judge then asked us to clear the courtroom. She called us in about 15 minutes later, and told us that she officially granted us adoption of Nick. Both Jon and I started to tear up.... and then told us that she waived the 10 day wait period....which she never does. What a wonderful day for us..... We thanked her repeatedly for the gift that she had just given us.

So, tomorrow afternoon, we will pick our son up at the baby home. Both of us are excited, and anxious. We can't believe that after 30 months, the adoption journey has led us to Vladivostok, Russia and we are now ready to take our son home with us. It is finally here! We expect this will be quite a transition for him.... and for us. We haven't had a 2 1/2 year old for some time, but am certain it will trigger our memories .... starting tomorrow night. The hotel here has upgraded us to a suite (a second room for Nick) so that will be nice as well.

We aren't sure of our travel plans at this point. We should learn more tomorrow, but we will definitely be home much earlier than expected. YEA! We most likely will travel to Moscow early next week and spend a few days (maybe a week?) there to finalize paperwork at the American Embassy, and then fly home to Illinois. More to come.....

As we write tonight's blog, we have already enjoyed a North American New York steak dinner (Jon) and seafood fettucini (Becky)..... and have sipped some Russian champagne (unfortunately, most of it had to go down the drain (not so good)) and are now onto our Merlot (Jon) and Chardonnay (Becky). We are celebrating and have toasted several times tonight....to our family, our friends, our lives. Again, we thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers and support throughout our entire journey. Without all of you, we wouldn't have been able to make it. Each and every one of you are important to us and we can't wait for you all to meet Nick very soon. God has truly blessed the Sipes family!

Love,
Beck and Jon

We are here!!!

Happy Winter from Vladivostok to everyone back home! (We loved the snowman that the children made outside of Nick's baby home - check out that hair (no, not Jon's!!).

We made it here through 4 airports, 2 red eye flights, 1 soup nazi and 1 (almost) lost bag - well redirected through yet another airport that is.

We started off Saturday morning in the snow....thankful that our flight took off -- on time -- from O'Hare to New York JFK (especially since 400+ flights had been cancelled the day before). A quick layover there (comparitively...only 3 1/2 hours) with a "couple" beers at Chili's and Jon's last chance to eat a hamburger for 3 weeks & we cheered on the lady Cyclones to victory (although they lost on Monday night) and we were off.

The JFK - Moscow flight wasn't bad (Jon had his plane drugs so that helped both of us -- immensely) as it was incredibly long & we sat next to a guy who snored the whole way! Needless to say, Jon and I could not for the life of us sleep at all!! We did meet 3 other couples who are adopting from Moscow. They were all on their last leg as well, so it was nice to chat with them. They had previously stayed at the Marriott in Moscow, so we got a few hints and tips for when we arrive there after our stint in Vlad - such as don't eat the breakfast buffet or it will run you about $90 bucks!

Side note: Delta now carries "Stirrings" - so Tina I toasted to you!

Anyway... 10 hours later and we were on the ground -- landing during snow -- and only found 3 of our 4 bags (of course the one missing was the bag with all of Jon's court attire). We waited and went to baggage claim when it didn't arrive (a little difficult to communicate that we lost a bag in Russian) but she asked our last name and immediately knew who we were. Our "lost" bag was misrouted to Atlanta... who knows why. We decided we stick around for another 45 minutes to see if it made the flight coming in from Atlanta, otherwise they would send it on to Vlad in about 3 to 4 days. By the Grace of God, that blue suitcase was one of the first to come off the conveyer belt!

We finally found our driver, who was just about to leave as he thought we missed our flight. He had to drive us from the International terminal to the Domestic terminal where we sat in one location for 8 hours - yes 8 hours - and this airport isn't like any US airport. It was brutal - I mean really really really really brutal. Jon fell asleep at the table, everything was in Russian and no one spoke English including the table cleaning lady who yelled at me in Russian and then grabbed my carry on and my purse from the table and threw them on the floor. Fun, fun! Finally we could check into our flight (quite an adventure and paid $80 because our bags were 5 pounds total overweight), got on our Aeroflot flight (a Boeing 767 of course because my husband will only fly on a Boeing or an Airbus :) ) and we both proceeded to sleep for quite a few hours. This flight was 8 hours, but we were soooo tired that it really didn't matter how it was or who was talking.

We finally landed in Vlad (Monday 11am // Sunday 8pm Central) - again, in snow. The ladies were right here for us and they took our bags and laughed when they asked me what I had packed. I told them you never quite know, plus for 25 days, I thought I'd packed light!

We came back to the hotel, showered, unpacked and tried to watch a movie but gave up. We napped from 3-8pm - ate a quick bite then went to bed from 11-7:30 this am.

We went to see Nick this morning, after more snow, we picked up Lana (our translator), our social worker Svetlana and our driver Alex took us to see him. I think he really remembered us - or our snacks - and came right over. I'm not sure if he has grown any, maybe just filled out a little. It was so good to finally hold him once again and he gave us sweet hugs. The 35 hours of travel was more than worth it and we wouldn't change a thing!! We didn't have much time to see him today just about 30 - 45 mins.

We are all prepped and ready - I hope - for court tomorrow at 2pm (Tuesday 11pm Central). Please say a quick prayer that all goes smoothly and we ask that you think of us if you are Night Owls and still awake at that time. The power of prayer! Lana said that we really have a nice judge and she hopes that we can get the 10 days waived, so we'll keep our fingers crossed but we aren't holding our breath.

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and prayers. We will let you know how tomorrow goes. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We can't wait to bring Nick home and see all of you!

Love,

Beck and Jon

Less than 24 hours!

We are off to pick up brother in less than 24 hours. Yikes, as I sit here still doing laundry! I think I have everything that I need to pack, now I am just not sure how it will all fit in 3 suitcases. Thank you to everyone who is now addicted to our blog. Let me try to recap Friday for everyone.

We were a little late arriving to the baby home due to Arina's daughter being sick that morning. We arrived at the baby home and like usual went upstairs to wait for Nakita. Arina comes bounding into the room with out him and says come follow me quickly. As we are racing down the pink staircase, she tells us that his groupa is performing for the celebration of autumn. She asked the director if we could watch. We went into the music room.(Picture posted previously) His groupa is sitting ever so still in the lined up chairs all dressed up. His caretaker Rita is dressed in a gown of autumn colors and sequins with a crown on leading the songs. The girls are all in white dresses with HUGE bows( Pam this would totally put the girl's bows to shame:)) The boys are dressed in white t-shirts and bright yellow shorts. They all have bibs made of bright yellow crinoline and feathers. The boys had orange bow ties on theirs as well. Come to find out that the children were all chicks and Rita was "Mother Autumn". The 3 year old groupa came to watch and sing along too. All the doctors and directors were there. They sang a few songs, with a man who was dressed in bright colors with the children and playing an accordion. Rita gave all the children tambourines to play along with on the next song. They shook them above their heads, and on their feet. Nakita loved this part. Rita got a volunteer from the 3 year old groupa. He played a mini-accordion with the man for a special song( we found out later that he is 4 and is waiting for his court date next month!!) The little boy and Rita then went out into the hallway, when they cam back into the room, they were singing about machina(cars). The little boy was pulling a truck full of bananas. You should have seen their eyes light up! Then all the children were singing about bananas.( Arina told us that the children don't get many fruits, because there are very few available, and the ones that they import from China are full of chemicals) Nakita ran over to the truck and followed by all the others from his groupa. They then turned on the music and the children got up and danced and laughed. I was invited up as Nakita's mama to dance too! Great fun!

We were then able to go upstairs and play for a bit. – I thought saying good-bye would be full of tears. – We both gave him a kiss and then before we could get too sentimental, he ran off (being of COURSE he was late for lunch – and boy that boy LOVES to eat!) – he sat at his table and waved “paka” to us both. That was it! – HE is SOOOO loved and they really take great care of him there. I feel good and we know we are coming back right after the holiday season – (I’ve already put in a tentative leave at work!!)

We’ve had a rough time adjusting to the time zones coming back, but we’ve also found a WONDERFUL sleep aid! (this will help us so much on trip #2) – Nat was excited to see us and we’ve put up quite a few pictures of Nakita at home. – It won’t be long and he will be running down our street and chasing after the dogs!

I will post more pictures and possibly some video when our computer is back up and running - it has a virus and it is totally down - go figure!!

Thank you to Everyone who has helped us in this amazing journey! We are so truely blessed!!!

Thursday in Vladivostok

Hi everyone!

We woke up early again today. Neither of us has been able to sleep well here. So, we tuned into yet another episode of Seinfeld. Yes, we watch the older american sit-coms on satelite. Everything says "stay tuned for the new episode". I spose they were all new...10 years ago. Anyway, it's fun and keeps us occupied. We've watched so many movies. I know Jon can't wait to get home and watch college football.

We went to the baby home around 10am. Nakita was ready for us. We stopped and watched the turtles and frog in fascination. He loves tapping the glass to scare the fish too. (He will really love the Petco fish station!) We hid the snacks today for just a little while to try to get him to play. It worked for about 20 minutes. We did a puzzle and he loves his touch and feel books. He mimicks "neigh" and "meow - meow". After awhile, he mainly concentrated on finding the snacks. He looked behind, under and around us. In the sack that we bring everyday, he took everything out trying so hard to find his snacks. We couldn't hold out and once we opened the can, he would take 2, give the can holder one and close the lid.

We had a great day playing and when we took him back to his group they were in the midst of story time. We open the doors and they all shout "Nakita" for his return. Very heartwarming!

We ate lunch with Lana and Arina here at the Vlad Inn. They are very comical in their stories of Russians and the "2" New Years celebrations they have. They call it Drunk month from December 31 - January 20!

This afternoon, we went to notarize our final document to formally request the adoption of Nakita. The gal was out to lunch so we went souvenier shopping quickly (as you all know, I don't like to shop quickly.... Jon became a little impatient. Shocker!) But, the store was about 5 million degrees and there definitely not alot of time to do everyone justice as Arina was waiting for us in the car. So Lana helped us pick and choose items. We had to go then back to the notary, who was located in an dark alley way. Very quick!

Lana, our interpreter, loves cats as we found out on one of our many drives. We told her that one of our good friends, Mr. T has 2 cats and a stroller for his kitties!! She loved that and had never heard of such a thing, but would like to see one! Mr. T you are are international icon now!! Such a trend setter!

Here are a few photos for you of the city and of Nakita today!

We miss you all!

Love Jon & Becky

Vlad photos.....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iHK7yvqgfrg/Rw3LnjJ88_I/AAAAAAAAADI/TYOX92zhPFo/s400/100_1692%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119972231702442994" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iHK7yvqgfrg/Rw3LBDJ889I/AAAAAAAAAC4/cdJiixkEZlQ/s400/100_1689%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119971570277479378" />

Day 3 in Artyom

Good Wednesday morning (or evening for those of us on the other side of the world!)

Today was great. Nakita's main objective was his snacks! He ate all morning long! We did go out for some playtime outside, but it was shaded and quite chilly. After that we stayed indoors and played with his books and ball, but he was HUNGRY! As we spend more time with him, he's really reminding me of someone else we all know.....stubborn, strong willed, a mind of his own, does what he wants to do, wants to eat when he wants to eat..... hmmm, who could that be? He did get slightly irritated with Jon when Jon tried to hug him. He yelled "NYET, NYET" followed by a finger point. Jon laughed. This is his boy.

We were able to take him up to his group of mates and they were ready for lunch and waiting for him. It is so heartbreaking to see all these faces staring up at us, not knowing their final story. Nakita pushed through them and was ready to eat! He turned around, waved "paca". We waved to all of his mates and will return tomorrow.

I tried to attach video of the countryside here, but it is taking WAY TOO long, so I will try to do that when I am at home.

Thanks for all your support! We love reading the comments and appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Becky & Jon

Here are some pics of his baby home "Desky Dom".

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iHK7yvqgfrg/RwxE8DJ885I/AAAAAAAAACY/36MevrqccQo/s400/100_1648%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119542674843300754" />
This is where they have music and special holidays.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iHK7yvqgfrg/RwxFmzJ886I/AAAAAAAAACg/OhnHEIYgp7g/s400/100_1627%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5119543409282708386" />
This is the pet turtle. Jon was overcome with emotion and in his words "what a great way to start a day." He then ran to me, gave me a hug and grabbed my hand and we walked into the playroom.

We spent alot of one on one time with Nakita today, and we know in our hearts that he is the child for us. He laughed, had a little temper (hello Jon!) and ran after us for hugs when we started to leave the baby home. As part of the adoption process, we understand that there are no guarantees - health wise - but we are more than willing to face those challenges head on with the support and love of each other, our family and friends. We are formally moving forward with adopting him and can't wait for the day when he can ride his trike! We do expect a very difficult day for us when we leave on Friday. We won't be able to return until late January/February at the earliest to see him again to bring him home, which seems so far away. We ask all of you for your continued thoughts and prayers. While this has been an experience of a lifetime, we are both mentally and physically exhausted from the happenings over the last 48 hours.

We're attaching some photos of our son ("brother") and are excited for the day when you can all meet Nakita.

Love and hugs to all of you!

Beck and Jon

Monday

What a wonderful day....

We met with a representative from the Russian Ministry of Education at 9am this morning to discuss adoption of a child in Russia. She asked us a smattering of questions about the US, about Russia, why we're choosing a Russian child over an American child, etc. Jon was sweating bullets, but all went very well. We'll detail out the traffic & Russian drivers (Jon will rarely complain about his commute any more!), as well as the hit and run we saw first hand. Oh, and the guy that attempted to break into the car we were sitting in ..... yes, our translator and adoption rep had to get our paperwork notorized, left us in the back seat of the car, and a gentleman attempted to break in. When he saw us, he took off. Again, welcome to Russia!

We weren't able to go to the baby home until 3pm, as the home did not want to interrupt Nakita's daily schedule. Words cannot describe the immediate love that we felt for him when he walked through the doors to meet us. Although he was somewhat leery of us at first, he warmed up quite quickly. Within 5 minutes, he was out of his caretaker's arms, eating cheerio-s with us and playing with the ball that Natalie had picked out for him. Not long after, he was in Becky's arms, playing ball and reading books. He is such a smart boy. He was high-fiving Jon and caught on quickly when Jon told him to give him knuckles (push his knuckles against Jon's). We were there over 3 1/2 hours (most parents are only allowed an hour on the first day) and got to go outside and play with his entire group of "mates". The children are wonderful, they were hugging and playing ball with Jon and we could not get enough of them. It's very sad to see the number of children that are so desperately in need of (and deserve) a loving home. Jon was the first one to say that he wished he could take more home with us (we'll need to discuss that a little more.....)

We have so much to tell all of you about Nikita. We also have several pictures of him and were going to post a few to the blog. However, we've decided to limit it at this point because of some news that we just received. Throughout the adoption process, we are working with our adoption Doctor at Illinois-Chicago regarding specifics around Nikita. Unfortunately, the Dr. just told us that he is concerned about some of the information that he has received from us about his health. It appears that this may complicate some of our decisions about Nikita. We certainly don't want all of you to become attached to this boy, as we have, so are waiting to post photos. We ask that you all please keep us in your prayers. It is so difficult to be here, live this life changing experience and not be able to talk to everyone, the way that we want to. Overall, it has been a wonderful day. We have met a boy that will forever change our outlook on life and how fortunate all of us in the US have it.

Unfortunately, it was also filled with sorrow. We learned this morning about the passing of Jon's Uncle Doug on Saturday night. Uncle Doug, a diehard Missouri Tigers fan, is most remembered for trading barbs with diehard Iowa Staters Jon and his brother Jamie over the years. It is Jon's hope that Doug is golfing with his Dad in Heaven, talking about the thrashing that MIZ-ZOU-RAH put on the Tigers' (and Cyclones') hated rival the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night. Our thoughts and prayers are with Spencer & Dawn and the entire family back home. We love and will miss you Uncle Doug.

Thank you everyone for your comments. We look forward to logging in every few hours and seeing who has replied. By the way, you all are making us laugh. You can sign your full names...don't have to be initials! You all know Jon and his "mild" fear of flying.... enough said.

The funniest thing on the plane.... the guy sitting next to us said "Sure could use a stoli." We both looked at him (it was just after Noon) and he laughed and told us "in the US, they say it's 5 o'clock somewhere, in Russia, it's Noon somewhere." Our kind of guy....

The airport was incredibly remote. The was only one runway/taxiway and was very narrow. The wings were out over the grass. The pilot also made a terrible landing (see... Jon's fear of flying). We then parked about 300 yards from the airport building and waited for buses straight from 1950 to shuttle us over. Once we got there, we waited for about an hour to get through passport control. Then, went through immigration and then finally got our bags (they were both there! Hurrah!).

We noticed once we made it through the double doors from immigration, two ladies were ferociously waving. We thought CHI (our agency) would have a sign so weren't sure who these ladies were. Anyway, they ran over to us, gave us hugs and welcomed us to the country. They had our photos from the St. Louis office.... Arina is the CHI rep here (young, speaks some English and has a great personality. Lana is our translator for the week....also young, speaks great English and has a great personality. They talked/laughed the entire way to the hotel.....

Vladivostok is beautiful. It reminds Jon and I both of northeast Iowa and Wisconsin with the leaves changing colors, etc. It's somewhat hilly with very narrow streets, with very FAST drivers. There were several landmarks on our way here....so there were alot of wedding parties on the side of the road taking photos. We also unfortunately saw a horrendous car accident with a fatality. Welcome to Russia!

Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by several other guests from Canada, New Zealand, etc. In fact, they invited us to "The White Rabbit", the bar in the hotel for some cocktails. We'll plan to catch up with all of them later this evening.

The hotel is near the ocean - a quick 2 minute walk. We already have ventured down there. The ocean is beautiful and some of the scenery was interesting... including men with speedos on (it's 50 degrees) and 15 year olds drinking beer on the beach. Fill you in with more later.....

We are so excited to meet Nikita on Monday morning. We go to court at 9am (5pm CST Sunday). Please pray for all of us and wish us well.

And Happy Birthday Pat Pat, hope you had a great one!!

We're in Seoul!

After a 14 hour flight from O'Hare to Seoul, we landed this afternoon at 4:45pm local time (2:45am in Chicago). Both of us are all over Korean Air.....the flight attendants were phenomenial...primarily because they had our first Budweisers (Bud Heavy - but not really an issue) to us about 15 mins after we took off. We continued on Buds and wine, for free, for the duration of the flight. Needless to say, it's was Jon's best flight ever. They fed us every 3 hours (large meals) and Jon was thrilled it was "good beef". He's eating away, thinking that he may not be eating much over the next week. Seriously though, Korean Air has exceptional service. We had our own 10 inch tv screens and were able to chose new movies, comedys, news and play Nintendo games. We also had a seat between us, so Jon chose to spread out and lay across all 3 of the seats - including mine. Always thoughtful!

Needless to say, we are both exhausted. Jon's patience is at an all time low. We've been having some difficulty getting this message to everyone because all of the internet cafes at the airport are Korean, and we hadn't been able to connect to any American websites.

We leave tomorrow morning for Vladivostok and will post photos, etc once we get there....probably within the next day or so. Please continue to check in and pray for us.

We hope everyone at home is doing well and we'll talk to all of you very soon.

Love, Beck and Jon

We're in Seoul!

ㅈ

WE GOT THE CALL!!

Hi everyone!

We finally received the call last Wednesday, Sept 26! As I was tripping over Molly and Louie (our labs) on my way out the door to pick up Natalie, Marti (our Children's Hope Rep) was calling.... yet again. I figured that it would be more paperwork.... as usual. She asked how I was.... which perked my interest.... and said that we were needed in Russia for an appointment with the Ministry of Education on Monday, October 8th. As I was writing everything down, it dawned on me that the travel was the following week. ARRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!! And to top it off, Jon was in Duluth, MN (a lovely place from what I hear :) ) on business. So thank goodness for cell phones, I texted him .... WE HAVE TRAVEL DATES!....and of course, I got a call back in 30 seconds! His awesome boss, Mary Jo, told him to call me (she's been living this adventure with us the last 2 years), called the trip short and he came home to help me plan the trip of a lifetime!

We are leaving on Thursday! Our flight is at 1pm Central from O'Hare direct to Seoul, South Korea. It is about a 14 hour flight (pray for Jon!) and thanks to Tina Kennedy (my wonderful friend), we will have a few movies to watch! We arrive in Seoul on Friday at 5:00pm - a world away, not to mention a day away! (It is 14 hours ahead of Chicago time). We will spend the night in Seoul on Friday - (yes I think after this we can be on the Amazing Race and do fairly well!) then our flight leaves Seoul to Vladivostok, Russia (located on the far eastern side of Russia, directly above North Korea) on Saturday October 6. We are so excited and anxious to meet "brother"!

Once in Vladivostok, we are staying at the Vlad Motor Inn. A very cool hotel, fairly remote from the city - and managed by Canadians, with imported North American beef, so my incredibly picky husband is thrilled they have hamburgers and chicken fingers (oh, and American beer & wine!). You can see it by going to www.vlad-inn.ru. I wanted to give our family and friends a place where you can view the updates of our adoption. This will be really useful when we are in Russia. You can follow our steps and hear what is going on before we get home.

I thought I would give some background information on the region that we are adopting from. We are going to Novosibirsk, Russia. Yep, that's right smack in the middle of Siberia. Novosibirsk is the city that prides itself on its size: it is the third-largest city in Russia after Moscow and St.Petersburg (the largest city east of the Ural Mountains). It has the biggest railway station along the Trans-Siberian route, the largest library in Siberia, and the biggest opera/ballet theater in all of Russia -- even bigger than Moscow's Bolshoi Theater. The City lies on both banks of the Ob River.

Novosibirsk has the third main cultural and scientific center in Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg), the university of Novosibirsk is quite famous too. The city is developing quite rapidly, and is considered to be the capital of Siberia. In 1943, the Academy of Sciences opened up its Siberian branch in Novosibirsk, which signaled the beginning of the city's transformation into the educational hub of Siberian Russia. While there are many research institutes located within Novosibirsk itself, there are still many more clustered in Academgorodok , a small city founded in the 1950's by the Academy, 30 km south of Novosibirsk. At its height, Academgorodok was home to 65,000 scientists and their families, and was a privileged area to live in, with well-stocked stores and dachas for the academic elite. .

Climate: The winters in Novosibirsk are very severe, cold and snowy. Summer is rather hot and dry. Temperatures in summer range from 20 to 22°C, (68-72F) ; in winter - 18 - 20°C , (0 to -4F)but sometimes they may go up to -35°C (-31F) in winter and 35°C, (95F) in summer . The difference between the highest and the lowest temperature is 88°C, (190F). The average sun in this region is 2880 hours an year.
